About Ya Kun Kaya Toast Singapore
The history of Ya Kun Kaya Toast Singapore dates back to 1926, when a determined and young 15-year-old named Loi Ah Koon arrived in Singapore from Hainan Island, clutching a black wooden suitcase. With uncertainties swirling in his mind, he found himself gravitating towards the local Hainanese community. Introduced to work as an assistant in a Hainanese coffee stall, Ah Koon quickly learned the ropes of the trade and began earning his meager earnings.
His entrepreneurial spirit soon ignited, and Ah Koon, along with two fellow Chinese immigrants, ventured into the coffee stall business at Telok Ayer Basin. However, his partners later left to pursue individual ventures, leaving Ah Koon to fend for himself. Undeterred, he decided to continue the business on his own, serving coffee, tea, eggs, and toast to the diverse crowd of customers.
In 1936, Ah Koon’s wife joined him in Singapore, and together, they perfected their craft. She skillfully made homemade kaya, a local spread of egg and coconut, to accompany their toast. Ah Koon also began roasting his own coffee, displaying his resourcefulness and dedication to quality. Despite challenges, Ah Koon’s commitment to service remained steadfast. He even chose to sleep on the hard wooden countertop at the stall in order to be ready to serve customers at 5 am each day.
Ah Koon’s dedication extended beyond providing food. He offered kindness, assistance to those in need, and even extended credit to regular customers. After more than 15 years at Telok Ayer Basin, Ah Koon relocated his business to Lau Pa Sat, naming it Ya Kun Coffeestall, with “Ya Kun” being the hanyu pinyin equivalent of his name. The stall earned recognition, receiving ‘The Most Courteous Stall in Lau Pa Sat’ award.
Over time, the business continued to evolve, moving locations and finally settling at its current site at Far East Square in 1998. Today, Ya Kun Kaya Toast Coffeestall is managed by Ah Koon’s children, upholding his legacy of dedication, quality, and kindness.
